What does your role as Development Manager involve?
My role as Development Manager is to raise money from public bodies, Trusts and foundations, business sponsors and individuals to support the work of the Festival.
What do you like most about your job?
I love being able to make things happen. For many performances the money raised by ticket sales doesn't cover the costs and so raising extra money is essential if the Festival is to be a success. I also love working with creative people.
What's the worst thing about your job?
Getting rejection letters saying "We're sorry but..."
How did you get started in this area of work?
I started as an office assistant at the Regional Arts Board doing very basic clerical work. I made a lot of contacts there, which was useful in getting started as a freelance arts administrator. I've been in my current post for a year but still do freelance work.
Where did you do your training?
I did my first degree at University of Leicester in the History of Art and then an MA in Arts Management at Anglia Polytechnic University. This summer I will be attending the National Arts Fundraising School.
What advice can you offer?
Make friends in the industry, a good network of contacts will always offer you opportunities.
